This Year’s Oscars Was Not Political…Or Was it?
People declaring that the 2023 Academy Award was good because it was void of politics clearly weren’t paying attention
I watched the Academy Awards this past Sunday reluctantly.
I was in the middle of a late evening nap after returning from watching my son perform with his orchestra and my husband barged in the bedroom and flicked on the lights to catch the show.
It was still early in the show.
Jamie Lee Curtis had won Best Supporting Actress for her role in Everything Everywhere All at Once (EEAO) and her co-star He Huy Qwan took the male counterpart award for his role in that movie and gave the best tear-jerking speech of the night.
If you read any of the post-mortems, you’d know it was a historic Oscar night because for the first time in history, two of the top actor categories, Qwan’s and Best Actress (Michelle Yeoh for EEAO) went to Asian actors.
However, scrolling through social media that night and the next day, I was perplexed to read a lot of people compliment this year’s presentation for not being too “political”.
It is true, in recent years, a lot of stars used their moment accepting awards to make very political statements…
