Shop Small is More Than an Act; It’s a Policy

In states like Maryland where small businesses were among companies worst hit by the pandemic, it’s imporant to galvanize around efforts support small businesses from encroaching big corporations.

“Shop Small” is more than just a campaign to buy from small businesses one day during the holiday shopping season in December for “Small Busines Saturday”.

Shop Small is actually part of a long-existing movement to support mom and pop brick and mortar stores and online merchants year round, and in every capacity.

Shop Small also means that when supporters of small businesses become aware of a policy or rules that penalize or threaten the livelihood of shopeekers or the ability of small stores to stay in business, we should sit up, pay attention, learn more and act, if possible.

I recently learned of efforts by large corporate and conglomerate interests in my home state of Maryland to lobby and advance legislation that would allow large chain stores to sell liquor which would inevitably and possibly, irreparably harm local bar, tavern, and package store owners and wholesalers.
