People Just Want to Go Home

Get out of the way. Let them go.

This week, with the release of the body cam footage of the brutal and savage attack and heinous killing or Tyre Nichols by 4 Memphis police offers,, we in the United States are rallying around the family of yet another brutality victim.

I am not a fan of trauma porn so I did not watch the footage and do not plan to. The same way that I purposefully avoid getting too consumed with all the negative news of the world, I have to save my mental health and well being this month.

It has been heavy for me for various reasons including the fact that I lost a very dear friend to cancer.

And also, it is no secret that when we learn of and commiserate in the misery of the departed at the hands of people who are tax-payer funded officers of the law who are supposed to protect the peace, we add stress to our own lives.

Studies say the mere learning of racial injustice alone shortens the lives of the people with shared heritage or racial background of the recipient of the ill treatment.

It’s like a weird unfortunate side effect to having empathy and shared lived experience.

So this isn’t about that.
